Few are the places where their diverse elements, whether environmental or human, form an area that reflects the integration between man and the environment. Such places achieve an important term in the field of tourism and its world: the unique selling point (A unique selling point (USP)), and this is one of the competitive advantages that significantly affect attracting tourists and visitors, leading the banner of creating a unique visitor experience.
This term was the essence of my master’s thesis in Arts and Cultural Heritage Management, which I applied to AlUla as a destination that combines elements that achieve the unique selling point. Although AlUla is one of the towns in Wadi Al-Qura, we have only linked the historical literary aspect of Wadi Al-Qura to the poet of Bani Adhra, the Qudai poet, Jamil bin Ma’mar, whom we know by the name of Ma’mar and recognize him by the name of Buthayna, and this is the sin of love.
Wadi Al-Qura, or AlUla in its fame and public knowledge, was not limited to a love-struck poet and the love story immortalized by history, which documented the places in poetry and his companionship with his she-camel, until his death in Egypt and his return with verses of farewell to Wadi Al-Qura with a trusted person who presented him the inheritance in exchange for delivering it to his beloved Buthayna. There are those who followed Jamil Buthayna, but in the sweetness of his voice, not in love, until he became famous enough to be associated with Wadi Al-Qura. His vocal talent surpassed his profession and craft, as he was an engineer, and he was mentioned in historical sources and references that documented Islamic engineers, such as the book: Notable Engineers in Islam by Ahmad Taymour Pasha (died 1930).
Omar Al-Wadi, this character that Wadi Al-Qura brought me together with during my doctoral research, has not received his due recognition in the forefront of the era as one of the names associated with Wadi Al-Qura like Jamil Buthayna. He is: Omar bin Dawood bin Zadhan, whose grandfather was a freedman of Amr bin Uthman bin Affan, may Allah be pleased with him. Omar was an engineer during the days of Al-Walid bin Yazid bin Abdul Malik, but he was known for his singing and frequented the gatherings of the elite. It is narrated that when Al-Walid was killed, Omar was singing in his presence, and Al-Walid mentioned him in a poem, including:
Indeed, I thought of Omar ** when he spoke and they mingled
And he sings poetry that he composes ** the master of the people who prevailed
The valley completed its craft ** in the essence of poetry and merged
Omar Al-Wadi had a melodious voice, and his voice led him to be among those who frequented the courts of the caliphs during the Umayyad era. He was not a musician, but it was mentioned that he was skilled at playing the drum, and his skill in drumming was described as if the drum spoke when struck by Omar Al-Wadi. His voice often dominated the musical instruments, and he was known as the master of art in Wadi Al-Qura. Many people from the valley learned from him, and he connected with several singers and learned from them, and he was one of those who sang in the presence of Al-Walid bin Yazid bin Abdul Malik, who referred to him as “the gatherer of my pleasures and the reviver of my joy.”
The reason for his learning to sing – and by singing, he means the voice – was that he was returning from Mecca and heard a voice singing, which attracted him, and he listened to it with a joyful spirit, almost falling off his mount. He followed the source of the voice, and it turned out to be a shepherd. He asked him to repeat the song, and the shepherd apologized, saying he had nothing to offer him and did not carry food with him, and that these verses were his sustenance: food, drink, and companionship. However, he considered the repetition a reading for him, so he sang again:
And when I came to Sa’dah in her land ** I see the land folding for me and her far reaches drawing near
From the white maidens, a friend longs for her ** when she has completed a tale, if only she could repeat it
Omar memorized it and began to repeat it and memorize other poetry until his fame reached horizons that led him to the courts of princes.
Wadi Al-Qura is a destination that can be reshaped as a unique area, combining the beauty of the environment, valleys, mountains, and soil, and civilization with the succession of states and kingdoms before Islam, and settlement continued thereafter, and still does, along with the arts of poetry and singing, agricultural economy, and its atmosphere suitable for travel. It forms a cultural composition linked to civilizations on one hand, and poetry, love, and art on the other.
Wadi Al-Qura remains a spring that enriches the scene, its historically continuous civilization, and its poets who still extend from Jamil, and the people of art following in the footsteps of Omar Al-Wadi, and for lovers, it is a nourisher. Regarding the stealing of the hearts of lovers, Judge Abu Ya’la Al-Tanukhi speaks of his beloved who resides in Wadi Al-Qura:
Sleep has lied in what it has taken ** with your person in my eyes and has slandered
And how can my dwelling be in the land of the Levant ** while your dwelling is in the land of Wadi Al-Qura?
And after that, I have hope for the meeting ** for I and you are above the earth
So Jamil Buthayna was not alone in his love, as he says:
Oh, if only I knew if I would spend a night ** in Wadi Al-Qura, then I would be happy
In conclusion:
Every breeze that passes from the north ** I say, this is from you, O Wadi Al-Qura
By God, the distance is beyond endurance ** but this is the reality that cannot be seen
