The American actress Eva Marie Saint, a star of Hollywood’s golden age and an Oscar winner, passed away at the age of 102, after a career that spanned more than 7 decades, during which she shone alongside some of the most prominent stars of global cinema.
Her representative confirmed her death yesterday (Tuesday), explaining that she died of natural causes at her home in Los Angeles, surrounded by family and loved ones.
Eva Marie Saint made her remarkable film debut in 1954 when she starred alongside Marlon Brando in the classic film “On the Waterfront,” directed by Elia Kazan, a role for which she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, portraying the character “Eddie Doyle.”
This debut came after Saint had established a presence on television and on the stages of New York, before moving to the big screen in her first film role opposite Brando, who was then at the height of his stardom.
Five years later, Saint solidified her place in Hollywood history when she co-starred with Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock’s film “North by Northwest” in 1959, embodying the character “Eve Kendall” in one of the most famous thrillers in cinema history.
The film combined romance, mystery, and suspense, and became famous for the iconic chase scene at Mount Rushmore, while Saint became one of the most recognized faces associated with Hitchcock’s films.
Throughout her career, which spanned over 70 years, Saint worked with a large number of Hollywood stars, including Montgomery Clift, Henry Fonda, Paul Newman, Gregory Peck, Richard Burton, Warren Beatty, James Garner, George C. Scott, Burt Lancaster, and Tom Hanks.
Her notable film works included “Raintree County,” “Exodus,” “The Russians Are Coming the Russians Are Coming,” “Grand Prix,” and “Nothing in Common,” in addition to “Superman Returns” in a later stage of her career.
Saint’s career was not limited to cinema, as she was also a strong presence on television and stage, receiving 5 Emmy nominations before winning the award in 1990 for her role in the miniseries “People Like Us.”
She also appeared on Broadway in the play “The Trip to Bountiful,” a role that caught the attention of director Elia Kazan, paving the way for her later collaboration with him in “On the Waterfront.”
Saint began her artistic career during the golden age of live television, where she received early Emmy nominations for works including “Middle of the Night” and a live musical version of “Our Town,” in which she portrayed the character “Emily” alongside Frank Sinatra and Paul Newman.
Eva Marie Saint was born in Newark, New Jersey, and grew up in Albany and Delmar, New York. She attended Bowling Green University in Ohio, planning to work in education before acting changed the course of her life.
After graduating, she moved to New York City, where she studied at the American Theatre Wing and trained under Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio.
In 2009, Saint returned to the Oscars as a presenter, and then appeared again at the ceremony in 2018, receiving a warm tribute from the attending stars when she took the stage at the age of ninety-three.
On a personal level, Saint was married to director Jeffrey Hayden for 65 years until his death in 2016. The couple left behind two children, along with 4 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
With the passing of Eva Marie Saint, Hollywood turns a new page in the history of its golden age, leaving behind an artistic legacy that spanned more than seven decades, with roles that brought her together with prominent names such as Marlon Brando and Cary Grant, alongside great directors including Alfred Hitchcock and Elia Kazan.
