A new poetry collection has been released today by the poet and playwright Saleh Zamanan, titled: “The Good Monsters / A Song for Minorities Yet to Come,” published by Adab Publishing and Distribution in the capital, Riyadh.
This collection includes 28 prose poems, spread over 124 pages of medium size, in which Zamanan greets his poetic audience after being preoccupied with major and exceptional theatrical experiences in the past few years, the most famous of which were the musical performance “RUSUM and TALAL” in 2023, “Our Hanging Poems… The Continuation of Glory” in 2023, and the opera “Blue of the Yamama” in 2024, as well as the performance “Travel 2” in 2025, among others.
Despite his remarkable distinction in the theatrical scene locally and Arab-wide as a playwright, Saleh Zamanan’s poetic experience has also garnered significant attention, appearing prominently in the blog of Saudi prose poetry and what some critics refer to as the new Arabic poetic writing; they see that the worlds of his poetry are characterized by stylistic phenomena unique to it, such as the dramatization of poetic text, the mythologizing of ordinary diaries, the humanization of inanimate objects, the Bedouin and pastoral tone, and the strong revival of childhood.
This was confirmed by the Saudi critic Dr. Sami Al-Ajlani previously, when he wrote: “The poetic world that Zamanan’s pen roams is far from being described as narrow or small; reading him makes you feel as if you are wandering above the vast world, listening to the spirit of eternity, the murmurs of rainforests, the ancient hymns of shepherds, and the myths of fertility and eternity. In this specific aspect, the uniqueness of this poetic voice and its striking specificity among other poetic voices in Saudi Arabia becomes evident, as if it draws from a poetic spring different from the prevailing sources of poetry.”
In the Arab horizon, the Moroccan poet, critic, and translator Dr. Mohammed Ahmed Beniss pointed out in a previous article in Okaz that Saleh Zamanan’s poetic experience represents one of the most vibrant samples of new Arabic poetic writing, as the experience arises from a striking artistic and aesthetic awareness, nourished by the theater laboratory and the reading of heritage, philosophy, and modern thought, creating different relationships between the self, memory, time, and things, and erecting strange and surreal images, as well as new and innovative relationships within the texts, opening up renewed interpretive possibilities, and astonishing the reader as he accompanies the poet through dark and mysterious paths, where the doors of existence slam and the senses, memories, and reveries tremble.
It is worth noting that Saleh Zamanan won the Sanusi Poetry Prize in 2016 with his collection “Returning from His Father,” marking the first Saudi experience to win that prize, as well as the first prose poetry experience to achieve it. He has also published in poetry: the collection “His Head in Grief… His Fingers in Laughter,” and the collection “The Faults of Noon.” His experience and poems have gained international attention due to his participation in a number of poetry festivals around the world, and the publication of several translated poetry selections, including:
– His Head in Grief… His Fingers in Laughter, 2014, in Spanish, published by the University of Costa Rica and the House of Poetry in San José.
– The Inn of Eternity, 2020, selections in Uzbek, published by Yashlar Publishing House in Tashkent.
– A Concise Mythology of Terror, 2021, selections in French published by Les Presses du Réel in Paris.
– Returning from His Father, 2024, in Chinese, published by the Beijing Normal University Press.
