Isabel Schnabel, a member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank, confirmed that interest rates need to rise further, pointing out that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the strength of the Eurozone economy pose upside risks to inflation.
Schnabel said in an interview with Bloomberg published today: “At the current monetary policy rate, it is unlikely that inflation will return to the target level in the medium term, and therefore further monetary tightening will be necessary.”
Increasing Borrowing Costs
The German member believes that inflationary pressures remain due to geopolitical and economic factors, necessitating the European Central Bank to continue raising borrowing costs to ensure price stability in the medium term, especially with the ongoing effects of the Middle East war on energy markets. Schnabel’s statements come at a time when market expectations are leaning towards the European Central Bank raising interest rates at its upcoming meeting in September, amid concerns that continued geopolitical tensions could complicate the task of curbing inflation in the Eurozone.
