The “Environmental and Ecology Law” in China officially came into effect on Saturday, in a significant legislative step aimed at promoting green transformation and establishing a legal framework for environmental protection and achieving harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.
The highest legislative body in China approved the law on March 12, 2026, after more than two years of legislative work, making it the second officially codified law in the country after the “Civil Code” issued in 2020.
The law consists of 1,242 articles distributed across five chapters, addressing pollution control, ecosystem protection, green and low-carbon development, along with several areas related to environmental and ecological protection.
The law was prepared through the integration, review, and systematic revision of more than 30 laws related to the environment and ecology, in addition to over 100 administrative regulations and nearly 1,000 local laws and regulations.
The entry into force of the law on August 15, 2026, marks an important milestone in China’s efforts to unify its environmental legislative system, enhance the protection of natural resources, and support the path of green and low-carbon development.
