The chances of a partial shutdown of the U.S. government increased today (Friday) after new obstacles emerged in the Senate against a bipartisan agreement that ensures the continued funding of federal agencies.
The agreement, announced by Senate Democrats and President Donald Trump this morning, aimed to enable Congress to pass a spending bill that funds a large number of agencies, while simultaneously negotiating new limits on immigration policy enforcement. However, this path stumbled after several lawmakers expressed their objections to the agreement, leading to a halt in proceedings within the Senate, which was scheduled to resume its sessions on Friday morning, at a time when government funding expires at midnight.
If the Senate successfully passes the agreement, it will still need the approval of the Republican-majority House of Representatives, which is not holding any sessions this week.
House Speaker Mike Johnson indicated the difficulty of bringing lawmakers back to Washington for a vote before the deadline, according to statements reported by Western media outlets.
