In a striking artistic initiative, Turkish calligraphers have revived the memory of the late Ottoman calligrapher Muhiuddin Tanir by erecting a new tombstone inscribed in Arabic letters, honoring his artistic legacy and role in the history of Ottoman calligraphy. This step came after his grave was discovered in 2022 in the Kastamonu province of northern Turkey, after its location had remained unknown for decades.

The significance of Tanir, who lived between 1876 and 1956, lies in his status as one of the most prominent calligraphers of the Ottoman era when Arabic letters were officially used in writing the Turkish language as well as in arts and architecture. Following the discovery of his grave, a local cultural association led an initiative to replace the printed tombstone with a handwritten one, considering that a distinguished calligrapher like him deserves to have his memory immortalized with living script rather than digital writing.

The calligrapher Mahmud Shahin was responsible for writing the eulogies in the thuluth script that Tanir himself was famous for, before the phrases were engraved on a marble stone placed above the grave in the presence of calligraphers and enthusiasts of Arabic calligraphy. The writing was done in the old Ottoman language, including words of mourning, the date of the calligrapher’s death, and the year of the tombstone’s renewal.

Arabic calligraphy enjoys a wide presence in Turkey to this day, whether in art exhibitions or cultural initiatives in which enthusiasts of writing in Arabic or Ottoman Turkish participate, continuing a historically close connection with the letters that have formed part of the country’s visual identity for many centuries.
